The Early Years

Mr. George B. Clarke, III, recently returned from serving in World War II, worked in a local clothing store in Kenbridge.

Mr. Roland Walker, a local entrepreneur and developer, owned a lumber mill located on Mill Street in the town of Kenbridge.

The two businessmen partnered to establish a construction company that would be managed by Mr. Clarke. Located at the intersection of Mill and Broad Streets and initially called Kenbridge Manufacturing and Supply Company, the business focused on residential construction and sold building supplies.

As the construction side of the business grew, the owners decided to incorporate the construction operation separately as Kenbridge Construction Company, Inc. Elroy Callis managed residential projects, Tommy Stables managed commercial projects, and Stuart Ingram did the bookkeeping.

1960s

Jack Roberts and Jerry Callis, both 1964 graduates of Virginia Tech with degrees in Building Construction, joined the company.

1970s

By this time, most of the work had shifted from residential to commercial construction.

1975

In collaboration with Bill Paulette, Kenbridge Building Systems was established to focus on constructing pre-engineered steel buildings.

1980s

Chesterfield Courthouse, with a price tag of $15 million, became the largest project to date, and put Kenbridge “on the map” in the central Virginia construction industry.

1983

Ownership of the company transitioned to Jack Roberts and Jerry Callis, and Kenbridge Building Systems separated, becoming known as KBS, Inc.

1986

Company headquarters moved from its original location to a new modern office building located at 1101 East 5th Avenue, where it continues to operate today.

1987

The company opened a second location in Northern Virginia.

1990s

As the cost of construction increased, the average contract price of Kenbridge Construction projects grew steadily as well.

1996

In 1996, Monticello High School in Albemarle County, with a contract price of $25 million, became the company’s largest project to date.

2005

Dinwiddie County High School, with a contract price of $55 million, was built.

2008

Clover Hill High School, with a contract price of $60 million, was built in Chesterfield County.

2013

Ownership of the company transitioned to Emory and Kristin Hodges.

2023

Kenbridge Construction celebrated 75 years in business.

The Academy at Virginia Randolph (AVR) Campus Renovation in Henrico County, with a contract price of $69 million, was currently the company’s largest project.
